What Can You Put in a Dumpster? (And What You Can’t) in Roseville, Rocklin & Lincoln

Before the dumpster lands in your driveway, it helps to know what is allowed inside it. Knowing the rules up front saves a phone call later and keeps a heavy load from costing more than you expected. This guide from Placer Dumpster Rental And Junk Removal LLC, a Rocklin company serving Roseville, Rocklin and Lincoln, sorts common household and project debris into three groups: fine to toss, not allowed, and worth a quick question first. Have an item you’re unsure about? Call or text (916) 878-0304.

Good news: most cleanout and remodel debris is fine

Our 10, 12 and 15 yard dumpsters take the stuff most people are actually getting rid of, and you can throw it all in together. There’s no need to separate materials into piles. Typical loads include:

  • Furniture: couches, chairs, tables, dressers and bed frames
  • Mattresses and box springs (our mattress disposal guide covers the free city options too)
  • Boxes, clothing and general household clutter
  • Appliances without refrigerant, such as washers and dryers
  • Remodel and demolition debris: drywall, wood, cabinets, flooring, carpet and roofing
  • Yard debris: branches, brush, leaves, grass clippings, shrub trimmings and old fence boards

Doing a big landscaping job? The yard waste dumpster page walks through green waste loads, and our green waste rules post explains what each city’s cart program accepts.

Heavy materials and the 1 ton limit

Every standard dumpster includes 1 ton of disposal, and on dense debris weight runs out long before space does. Tile, plaster, roofing shingles and yard waste full of dirt are the usual culprits; a box can reach a ton while it still looks half empty. Going over isn’t a disaster. Extra weight is billed at $110 per ton, prorated, so a small overage stays small.

Planning a full tear-off or a big tile job? Tell us when you book. Sometimes the smarter move is a second load, which is $50 off the regular one-day rate and comes with its own included ton.

Concrete, dirt and rock need their own dumpster

Concrete, asphalt, dirt, brick and other masonry never go in the 10, 12 or 15 yard. They go in our separate Concrete & Dirt dumpster, which is built for the weight. That box has its own rules:

  • One clean material per load: clean concrete, clean dirt, clean asphalt, or concrete/masonry brick
  • Never two of those in the same load, and no wood, drywall, household junk, loose metal or green waste mixed in
  • Rebar inside concrete is accepted if it sticks out no more than 6 inches
  • Each load is limited to 5 cubic yards, with no dump fees

Sod belongs with the heavy material too: it goes in our Concrete & Dirt dumpster, not a standard box. For gravel, rock or decomposed granite, call or text us first and we’ll tell you whether it can go in a heavy load.

Items we can’t take

These are not allowed in any of our dumpsters:

  • Paint, solvents and gasoline
  • Chemicals and any other hazardous waste
  • Car batteries and other batteries
  • Tires
  • Appliances that contain Freon, like a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner still holding refrigerant
  • Railroad ties and telephone poles
  • Anything else California state law prohibits

Electronics are another item to keep out of a rented box. Our hazardous waste and e-waste guide lists local drop-off and pickup options for paint, batteries, chemicals and e-waste, with links to the official sources. The same list appears in our rental terms.

Items to ask about first

A few things fall in a gray area, so a short text with a photo saves trouble later:

  • Gravel, rock or decomposed granite. We’ll tell you if your material can go in a heavy load.
  • A mix of heavy and light debris. Concrete mixed with lumber, for example, doesn’t fit either dumpster as-is. We’ll help you split the job.
  • Tires, old fridges and TVs. They can’t go in the dumpster. Our junk removal crew hauls refrigerators and electronics; for tires, ask us before you add them to the pile.
  • Anything unlabeled. Mystery cans and jugs from the garage shelf should be checked before they go in.

How to load it safe and level

Our dumpsters are about 7 feet wide with 4 to 5 foot sides, low enough that you can toss debris in by hand. A few habits get the most out of the space:

  1. Lay big flat pieces, like doors, plywood and tabletops, on the floor first.
  2. Take furniture apart and break down boxes so they lie flat.
  3. Spread heavy debris across the floor instead of piling it at one end.
  4. Fill gaps with bags and smaller pieces as you go.
  5. Keep the load inside the box. If the pile is going to rise above the sides, call or text us before you keep stacking, and we’ll talk through a second load.

Not sure the space will be enough? Our dumpster size guide matches common projects to each size.

Rather skip the loading?

If most of the pile is furniture, appliances or electronics, junk removal may be the easier route. Our crew does the carrying and loading. Pricing starts at a $150 minimum, runs about $500 for half of our trailer and about $900 for a full trailer, labor included. Our bulky item pickup guide also covers what the cities collect for free, and where your junk goes explains what happens after we haul it.

What can go in a dumpster: FAQ

Can I put a mattress in a dumpster?

Yes. Mattresses and box springs can go in our 10, 12 and 15 yard dumpsters along with the rest of your load.

Can I put tires in a dumpster?

No. Tires are on our list of items that can’t go in our dumpsters. Call or text us to ask about other options for them.

Can I throw an old refrigerator in a dumpster?

Not if it contains Freon. Appliances that hold Freon are prohibited in our dumpsters, but our junk removal crew can haul refrigerators.

Can I mix concrete and dirt in the same load?

No. The Concrete & Dirt dumpster takes one clean material per load, so concrete and dirt have to go in separate loads.

What happens if my dumpster goes over 1 ton?

You pay only for the extra weight, at $110 per ton, prorated.

Do I have to sort my debris?

No. Household junk, furniture, remodel debris and yard waste can all go in one standard dumpster together. Only concrete, dirt, asphalt and brick need the separate heavy-material dumpster.
