The green waste cart handles weekly yard trimmings. It doesn’t handle a whole hedge, a fallen limb or a backyard makeover. Here are each city’s cart rules from official sources, and what to do when the pile is bigger than the cart.
Roseville
What goes in the green waste cart, per the City: – Prunings less than 4 inches in diameter, cut to fit inside – Leaves and grass clippings – Christmas trees, unflocked and cut to fit inside
Green waste goes out on your assigned A or B week. Look up your week on the City’s site. Leave 4 to 6 feet between your garbage and green waste carts, and all the way around each cart. Trash must be at the curb by 6 a.m.
For bigger yard jobs, the City also rents six-yard dumpsters for light yard clean-up and household refuse, first come, first served. They can’t be used for dirt, rock, concrete or sod.
Lincoln
Per the City of Lincoln’s 2026 Solid Waste Services Guide: – Green waste includes grass clippings, leaves and prunings less than 2 feet long and 2 inches in diameter. – Green waste is collected every other week. Each street is assigned a color (blue or yellow) that stays the same year to year. – Green waste can’t be bagged. Carts go at the edge of the street, not on the sidewalk, by 6:00 a.m., 5 feet apart. – The City lists bagged leaf pickup in December among its seasonal services.
Rocklin
Rocklin uses two bins: one for trash and recycling, and one for green waste. Recology Auburn Placer provides collection, and sorting happens at the regional Materials Recovery Facility. For Christmas trees, Rocklin has offered free drop-off at Twin Oaks Park and Johnson-Springview Park after the holidays. The 2025–26 season ran December 26–January 4. Remove lights and ornaments; flocked trees aren’t accepted. Confirm this year’s dates with the City or WPWMA.
When the pile is bigger than the cart
Cart limits are why we get calls after big trims, storm cleanups and landscaping projects. Your options:
- Yard waste dumpster: a 10 yard holds about 4 pickup truck loads and is $399 with delivery, pick-up and 1 ton included. Branches, brush, leaves, clippings and old fencing can all go in. See our yard waste dumpster page.
- Dirt, sod and rock can’t go in a standard dumpster. Clean dirt goes in our concrete and dirt dumpster: $399, 5 cubic yard limit, no dump fees. Green waste isn’t allowed in that box.
- Junk removal: we’ll haul yard debris for you, priced by volume with a $150 minimum.
