Paint, solvents, batteries and many electronics can’t go in your trash cart or in a rented dumpster. Our terms prohibit hazardous materials, chemicals, paint, batteries, tires and appliances containing Freon. The good news: all three cities offer free options for residents. Here’s what each one offers, from official sources.
Everyone: free drop-off at WPWMA
The Western Placer Waste Management Authority, 3195 Athens Avenue, Lincoln, accepts household hazardous waste (HHW) free for Placer County residents, daily 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Accepted items include fluorescent lights, household and car batteries, used motor oil and filters, home-generated sharps and pharmaceuticals, cooking oil and grease, paint, cleaners and solvents, and most products labeled Dangerous, Hazardous or Toxic. E-waste is also free for residents.
Limit: no more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds per drop-off.
Roseville: free doorstep pickup
The City of Roseville offers free doorstep pickup of household hazardous waste and e-waste for residents, by appointment.
- Collected: batteries (tape the ends), fluorescent tubes (4 ft or smaller, up to 10) and bulbs, mercury thermostats and thermometers, TVs, computers, monitors and printers, DVD players, VCRs, stereos, cell phones, cooking grease and motor oil (sealed and labeled), paint (up to 5 gallons), automotive fluids, and chemicals in their original containers.
- Minimum: 20 pounds or 5 different item types. Maximum: 15 gallons or 125 pounds per pickup.
- Staff can’t enter homes, go behind gates or go upstairs. Items left out without an appointment aren’t collected. No glass containers.
Rocklin: free curbside pickup through Recology
Rocklin offers free curbside pickup by appointment of household and auto batteries, e-waste, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, fats, oils and grease, and motor oil and filters. Service isn’t available in all areas, so call Recology Auburn Placer at (530) 885-3735 to confirm and schedule.
Lincoln: free Wednesday universal-waste pickup
Lincoln Public Works offers free pickup of universal waste (fluorescent tubes, lamps, thermostats, oil and filters, batteries, TVs, computers, printers, cell phones, cooking grease, and “basically anything that has a plug”) every Wednesday, by appointment. Call (916) 434-2450. The City notes that slots fill fast.
What about the rest of the cleanout?
Once the hazardous items are set aside, everything else can usually go:
- Junk removal: we take furniture, appliances, and electronics such as TVs, computers and monitors as part of a regular load. We can’t take paint, solvents, gasoline, hazardous waste or car batteries. See junk removal.
- Dumpster rental: household junk, construction debris and yard waste. See pricing.
If you’re not sure about an item, call or text (916) 878-0304 before your appointment.
